Research Essay

In the reading, “The Impact of Social Media Usage on Human Societies” by Racha Ouissal Seghiri, she explains the positive and negative impact social media has on people. Some negative impacts of social media are that it can negatively impact mental health by isolating them from the real world, “This isolation turns users into virtual beings who prefer solitude, distancing them from real-life experiences and leading to wasted energies.” (Ouissal 6)

This shows how when people spend too much time on social media they’re isolating themselves and spend most of their time online which can lead to them losing opportunities to socialize with people in the real world and since they get used to being isolated it can lead to them having a hard time socializing with others when needed. But it can also improve the mental health of people, “Social media allows users to express emotions and feelings that might be difficult to convey in real life.” ( Ouissal 4)

This proves how social media can be used for good by enabling people to meet those who have similar interests as them and creating friendships that allow them to feel comfortable enough where they can speak to them about how they’re feeling and the other person can provide support to them and it’s all confidential between them. Social  media can also be good as it can help spread news and important information about a serious/important topic, “As the fastest and most effective new medium, social media delivers real-time information about global events.” ( Ouissal 4).

This shows how people who are looking for information about a global issue can look at social media to help them get informed as there are people who like to educate people on these topics, so they don’t get anything wrong and are aware of the situation. Although this leads to another negative thing about social media as it can easily be used to spread misinformation and rumors. As Racha Ouissal said in the reading, “Young people often receive incorrect or scientifically inaccurate information from unreliable social media sources.” (Ouissal 5).

This helps explain how misinformation can be spread, because many people have access to the internet and social media, and someone could easily take something out of context and make something up about someone or something important and post it. Someone could easily take something out of context and make something up about someone or something important and post it.

The conclusion of the article emphasizes that the negative effects of social media usage outweigh its positive impacts. It highlights concerns such as privacy violations which are harmful to societal morality and individual well-being. To address these issues, the author suggests establishing monitoring committees to regulate social media, raising awareness to press the truth from misinformation. Additionally, the role of cyber police is underscored in preventing and penalizing electronic violations.
